Problems with Other Repair Options

If you have been given a excessive quotation by your laptop manufacturer or an unsatisfactory repair attempt from your local PC repair shop, then we can help. We often hear of problems with manufacturer / PC shop repairs:

  • Manufacturers will not repair your laptop to component level and, from our experience, when you have a processor fault they are likely to quote you for a new motherboard and processor even if there is nothing wrong with the board. We find all manufacturer ex-warranty repair pricing excessive.
  • PC repair shops generally do not have the in-house expertise to repair laptop faults. PCs are much simpler to repair, as parts tend to be universal. In our experience, most PC shops do not know what a laptop invertor board is, let alone how to fix one! Simple power supply faults are often mis-diagnosed as motherboard failures.

Always ask for qualifications and remember that repairs carried out by unqualified personnel could be dangerous.

The Notebooks UK Difference

Our electonics engineers have a minimum of 10 years' experience in component-level repair and are fully qualified (City & Guilds in Electronics & Servicing, with Distinctions).

We diagnose faults to micro-component level which is labour-intensive, but enables us to offer significant savings over conventional methods of swapping whole components. This allows us to work on a fixed price basis. Our equipment includes top-of-the-range oscilloscopes, multimeters, surface mount chip removers, needle-point soldering irons and we carry a large stock of ICs, capacitors and thousands of parts.

Fixed Price Repairs

The fixed price repair works like this:

  • We strip the laptop down to the motherboard and inspect in detail.
  • We note any component faults and look for an underlying cause of failure.
  • We then fix the laptop, re-assemble and carry out a 24-hour stability test

This approach gives us a 90-95% success rate on any motherboard, PSB or screen invertor-board repair. We have a 2-4% recurrance rate on the jobs carried out. Capacitors, fets, fuses, standard intergrated circuits/controllers, tracks, power circuits, keyboards, on board memory, most screen invertors and mouse faults are all included in our fixed price.

If your laptop doesn't power up and no lights appear when the mains lead is plugged in (main battery removed) and the power switch is depressed then you may have an internal power supply fault. In these circumstances we have a 99% success rate at fixed price.

There are certain items we cannot do at fixed price. These include: processors, expensive intergrated circuits/controllers, hard drives, spill damage (requires chemical wash), missing lines on screen, CD/DVD/CD-RW laser units, BGA chips (not normally economical to repair), some floppy drives and multiple faults.

We operate 2 laptop repair service models:

  • 5-7 day service - includes 24 - 48 hour 'soak-test' at normal fixed price with a 6 month guarantee on the parts replaced as long as the makes are Compaq/HP, Toshiba, IBM, Dell, Panasonic and Sony with a 3 month guarantee on all other makes.
  • 24-48 hour express service - as per 5-7 day service, but priority service. Includes 3 month replaced part guarantee on all makes.

If you feel your laptop has been assesed incorrectly by your previous repairer we will offer a reduced rate assesment if you proceed with the repair with us.

Software errors/viruses will be treated at the standard fixed price.
